Property Point Marbella - Picasso and Modern British Art
‘Picasso and Modern British Art’, a five-month exhibition which is on show at Tate Britain from February 12 next year, will explore the Málaga artist’s lifelong connections with Britain and his enormous impact on British modernism, in particular his influence on seven British artists, including Francis Bacon and David Hockney.
Tate Britain said the exhibition ‘will explore Picasso’s rise in Britain as a figure of both controversy and celebrity, tracing the ways in which his work was exhibited and collected here during his lifetime, and demonstrating that the British engagement with Picasso and his art was much deeper and more varied than generally has been appreciated’.
This major show will include over 150 works from private and public collections across the world, including over 60 paintings by Picasso. They will be exhibited chronologically, covering a period of 70 years, with pieces by Picasso alternating with pieces by Duncan Grant, Wyndham Lewis, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, Graham Sutherland and David Hockney, demonstrating a direct response to his work.
For example, Francis Bacon’s ‘Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion’ will be displayed with Picasso paintings based on figures on the beach at Dinard, which the Tate said first inspired Bacon to take up painting seriously. In addition, there will be the chance to see a number of Hockney homages to the Málaga artist. David Hockney became so enamoured with Picasso that he visited his 1960 exhibition at the Tate no fewer than eight times. Members of the royal family were also amongst the visitors.
The show includes his 1925 painting ‘The Three Dancers’, which the Tate acquired after the 1960 exhibition.
Amongst the other Picasso pieces on show will be ‘Head of a Man with Moustache’, the Cubist work which was seen in the UK before the First World War when Cubism first began to be known there through exhibitions by the post-Impressionist artist Roger Fry. ‘Man with a Clarinet’ and ‘Weeping Woman’, works which were acquired by two major British collectors of Picasso, Douglas Cooper and Roland Penrose, will also be on display.
The show also takes a look at Picasso’s time in London, the three months in 1919 that the artist spent there designing scenery and costumes for Sergei Diaghilev’s Les Ballet Russes production of ‘The Three-Cornered Hat’. He worked from a studio in Floral Street in Covent Garden and was joined on his trip to London by his first wife, Olga Khokhlova, the Ballet Russes dancer who he had married the previous year.
Picasso was not widely known to the British public at this time, and it was immediately after the Second World War that he came to greater attention with an exhibition of his work at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1945; the pieces by the Málaga artist and Henri Matisse had been sent over by the French government as thanks for the liberation from the Nazis.
The exhibition provoked hostility amongst conservative British society. El País notes a comment made by Winston Churchill to the President of the Royal Academy, Alfred Munnings, in response to the exhibition, ‘Alfred, if you met Picasso coming down the street, would you join me in kicking his ….?’
The Tate show will also consider the significance of Picasso’s political status in Britain, with photographs of the 1938-39 Guernica tour and of his only other visit to the country to attend the 1950 Peace Congress in Sheffield.

Property Point Marbella – Is 2011 the year to buy property?
Should you cash in on current property prices?
Well, a lot depends on your reasons for buying. If you plan to purchase during the next 12 months, you could find yourself buying in a falling market. That said, few property experts are predicting prices will fall sharply.
Nationwide’s chief economist Martin Gahbauer said there was little evidence to suggest house price declines will accelerate in the months ahead and Martin Ellis, Halifax’s housing economist, expects house prices to remain “broadly stable” during 2011.

Property Point Marbella - Spanish tourist arrivals post seventh monthly increase in November

Tourism, which accounts for around 10 percent of Spain's economy, has taken a battering due to the emergence of cheaper sunshine destinations in the eastern Mediterranean such as Turkey and Egypt and the drop in the value of the British pound.
The country got 52.5 million visitors in 2009, down 8.7 percent from 2008 when Spain lost its ranking as the world's second most visited country to the United States.

Property Point Marbella - El Gordo Christmas Lottery
The Spanish Christmas lottery, El Gordo or 'The Fat One', is the biggest lottery in the world and one of the oldest, having started in 1812. While the first prize in 2005 was 'only' 3€ million, El Gordo has the biggest prize pool of any lottery in the world, last year totaling over two billion euros!
How the El Gordo Spanish Christmas Lottery Works
The Spanish Christmas Lottery works differently to most lotteries in the world. A whole ticket billete is very expensive, costing 200€ in 2005. However, these tickets are split up into ten decimos (tenths) costing 20€ each. When buying your tickets you have the choice of buying a single decimo, a whole ticket, or a fraction of your choice. If you don't buy the whole ticket, someone else will buy the rest of your ticket.
The Draw
El Gordo is drawn every December 22. The process is very long, taking more than three hours, so you will likely see people sat by their radios for much of the day, waiting for the results.
As the wealth is often spread out among a group of people rather than a single person, a win in a small community can have a profound effect on the local economy
So invest in a ticket and you could be having a very merry Christmas!

Property Point Marbella – Rural Spanish Properties Gaining in Popularity
Traditionally, France and Italy have been the sought-after destinations for renovations, but according to Charles Weston Baker, head of Savills’s international department, the focus is turning to rural Spain, where farmhouses (caseríos, cortijos, masias or fincas) can cost three times less than the equivalent in Provence or Tuscany.
Prices start at under £100,000 for a three-bedroom farmhouse in Spain, so it’s easy to see why the market is proving so attractive to British investors.
A decade ago Chris Stewart, the co-founder of Genesis, bought an abandoned farm in the Alpujarras, south of Granada, with blossoming almond trees and ancient olives.
His book Driving Over Lemons bears similarities to A Year in Provence, Peter Mayle’s account of moving to Provence, but the rural Spain he portrays is more rugged. His farmhouse had no access road, electricity or running water and the locals were peasant farmers and shepherds. This might sound bleak, but as southern France and Italy become increasingly “discovered”, Spain’s lost wilderness is appealing to more adventurous buyers.
Inland Andalusia is an obvious choice for British buyers due to its affordable prices, proximity to the coast and several airports (Alicante, Granada, Malaga).
In the most popular areas, particularly the vicinity of Ronda, ruined fincas sell for as much as £500,000, but in more remote parts you can pay less than £80,000.

Property Point Marbella - Andalucia for Christmas
Andalucía, the best gift for Christmas” is the slogan that from this week the junta will be using to promote the region as the perfect winter holiday destination. The campaign will stretch to the U.K, Germany, France; Portugal and Italy as well as other regions of Spain and has a budget of 1.1 million Euros.
The reassurance from the air traffic controllers and the government that there will be no disruptions over the Christmas holidays has come just in time for this campaign aimed at attracting tourists from countries and regions that have excellent air, rail or road connections with Andalucía.
The idea is to turn Christmas into a tourism product so that booking a trip to Andalucía will have the same attraction at this time of year as it does in the spring or summer.
While the ambassador admitted the project was ambitious he stressed the diversity of the region at this time of year. Skiing in the Sierra Nevada, visiting national parks and other areas of natural beauty, cultural breaks in the cities or trips with an emphasis on gastronomy, shopping or leisure are among the proposals the Junta will be making to tempt visitors.
From now until January 5th new Andalucía Christmas advertisements will be seen on television and radio, in cinemas, newspapers and on the internet, as well as on billboards and in shopping centers and football grounds.
