The City of Vélez-Málaga (Málaga) has launched a campaign to prevent drinking and driving, which among other things, plans to reward drivers with vouchers redeemable for free fuel if they are negative on breath tests when stopped by the Local Police.
Trinidad Manzano, technician of the Department of Social Affairs, explained that the initiative is part of the campaign 'alternative driver', run over the last three years by the City to try to ensure that groups of youths who go out partying always have a designated driver.
Manzano said in a press conference that the campaign will run every Saturday until 10 January, from midnight to 0300 hours at the Point of Care Movida (PAM), installed next to the nightclub El Copo, and consists of several activities to prevent and detect alcohol consumption among young people.
"If, after testing the driver, the agents find that their results are zero, the driver will receive a letter congratulating him on responsible consumption, which can then be redeemed at the GPA for 10 euros worth of free gas," Manzano said.
In addition to these controls, the campaign will build on other activities such as sharing information to young people on the set of alternative driver or the possibility of undergoing three voluntary breath tests overnight. Should they be negative, the young people receive gifts and, if the result is positive, they are given a free bus ticket to return home.
The mayor, José Andrés Montoya, stressed the importance of these preventive actions and alcohol testing for drivers, since, as he pointed out, "over the past five years, alcohol has been present in one in three road accidents. "
