Plan to bring cruise liners to Marbella

After years of debate, the project to expand the Puerto Marina-La Bajadilla in Marbella so that it can accommodate cruise liners seems finally to be moving ahead, if not at full steam.

Decades ago the late Mayor, Jesús Gil y Gil, promised the construction of an island off the resort so cruise ships could call, but now the Agencia de Puertos has said that tenders to extend the port can go out before the end of the month, following a change in conditions from the Junta de Andalucía.

Marbella Town Hall wants to see a new 150 metre deep water quay constructed which will allow for the arrival of all but the very biggest liners. The project is expected to be a public/private partnership and cost some 70 million €.

An additional 400 berths would also be obtained with the expansion, in addition to the current 270.
