Severiano “Seve” Ballesteros was a Spanish professional golfer and World Number 1 who was a big golfing name during his major golfing days between the mid 70s and mid 90s and died last week at home on 7th May 2011.
Aged just 54, Seve had been battling with cancer after having a malignant brain tumour diagnosed in 2008. Having retired from competitive golf in 2007 due to poor form, the cancer continued to take hold and prevented him from returning.
Seve Ballesteros won the Masters tournament twice, the Open Championship three times and 5 major championships between ’79 and ’88. He also brought a great deal of success to the Ryder Cup team both as captain and player and was victorious as captain of the European side in 1997.
He was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement award for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2009 and even then it was apparent that his health was far from 100%.
Seve’s funeral will take place in his home village of Pedreña, Cantabria today and there will be 3 days of traditional mourning in the local area. As were his wishes, his ashes will then be placed next to a magnolia tree at his home.
At the recent Madrid Open tennis semi-final between Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, Rafa was heard to pay tribute to the greatest Spanish golfer that lived. Respects have also been paid at other national sporting events recently including before the La Liga match on the weekend.
