Andalucía has to be one of my favorite places in the world. Not only is the weather hot (or at the very least, warm) pretty much all year round, it’s insatiable appetite for enjoying life infiltrates even the sternest of constitutions. Andalucían’s are practically born with the word fiesta on their lips and this passion for not taking life too seriously definitely makes a refreshing change to hectic London life.
For Brits, Marbella (found to the south of Malaga) has long had a glamorous appeal – with images of wealthy celebs sunning themselves from their expensive villas while sipping pina coladas from beneath a line of perfectly formed palm trees. This glitzy vision however, doesn’t detract from the essence of this Spanish hot-spot, where people come to be seen or come to see…
People watching is always free in Marbella
My budget doesn’t quite stretch to hiring a luxury villa or hanging out in champagne bars but you don’t need a big money budget to do a bit of exploring and unashamed people-watching. After hiring a car in Malaga I drove along the coast taking in the best of Andalucía’s Costa del Sol (think, Benalmadena, Fuengirola & Torremolinos) before driving inland to check out Mijas – a beautiful white-washed town where camera’s fight for a work-out.
Golfing for the Men, Spas for the Women
Marbella was the final stop on my road trip. Here I toured one of the area’s many golf courses (and ate lunch in the chic sea-front restaurant) before admiring the adjacent Marbella spa where you can unwind and relax while your other half practices their swing. Not that I’m being sexist – you just wouldn’t want to risk showing them up on the course…
